Why
Alpacas?
Investment: Being extremely conservative, we visited a number of
farms and asked numerous questions before purchasing our first alpacas.
We certainly were attracted by their cute, cuddly, gentle dispositions,
but still felt that if we could not make money on our investment,
what would be the point? Unlike many other livestock, alpacas have
kept their value or increased in value since they were first imported
to the U.S. in 1984. Prices
for quality herdsires have soared. This is in part due to the limited
number of alpacas in the U.S. They can no longer be imported. The
Alpaca Registry requires that all alpacas be blood-typed to ensure
accurate breeding records.
The majority
of farms have under 5 alpacas. Many investors will sell their first
offspring to recoup their investment, others will choose to grow
their herd. There is a sense of security when you have full control
over your investment, an investment you can see by looking out your
window. (How many people have their hands in your stock investments?)

Tax Advantages: Livestock, farm equipment,
and other business expenses such as computers, cameras, travel,
etc. are fully depreciable or tax deductible.
Ease
of Care: You
can raise 5-10 alpacas per acre. They are pasture grazers and eat
approximately 1 bale of hay per month. Each animal is given a daily
grain supplement costing less than $.50 per day. These animal have
a communal dung pile, making clean up easy.
Fleece
not meat: Fleece is shorn once a year in the spring.
It is a joy to see them kick their heels (hooves) and frolic in
the pastures when freed from their winter coat. No slaughtering
of an animal you have grown to love.
Insurable
Livestock: Each alpaca can be fully insured for aprox.
3% of purchase price. Strong national organization: The Alpaca Owners
and Breeders Association (AOBA) board of directors is composed of
both large and small breeders and is committed to the success of
all breeders. The association is active in marketing, publishes
the AOBA magazine (now sold in news stands) assists in education,
etc. AOBA's marketing has been so successful that other breeding
associations are asking for their assistance.
